What intended parents need to know about surrogacy?

What intended parents need to know about surrogacy?

Most of the potential intended parents dream to own a biological baby through surrogacy. To realize their dreams of paternity intendedparents search for the best surrogate agency to realize their dreams of paternity. However, worth mentioning, some of the sterile couples have zero knowledge in this process and they don’t know how to start with it. The first step to realize the dream of having a biological child from the best surrogate mother is to find the reputed surrogate agency in the United States of America. The commissioning couples need to do some research to find the best one because there is no federal rules and transparency in the state laws to govern the surrogacy agencies. There is no particular law that tells how and by whom the surrogacy agency need to be operated. Therefore, it is important for potential intended couples to find the best one.

Once the intended parents choose the best surrogate agency, they will match the couples with the proxy and arrange a meeting to establish a health relationship with each other. The couples then need to fill an application form seeking surrogacy to help in establishing their family. A contract is made between commissioning couples and proxy mother, which briefly outlines the rights and responsibilities of biological parents and proxy mother, compensation paid to a surrogate, medical fee, maternity fee, legal fee and agency fee paid by the intended parents. This contract is very essential to proceed further in surrogacy process. Couples need to read the terms and conditions, each of every point mentioned in the contract and in case if they don’t understand anything mentioned in the point, they can ask representatives to clear the point.

A perfect contract and the perfect surrogate mother who can understand your feelings can make your journey easier.

A brief overview on surrogacy and its types

Surrogacy is the most popular Assisted Reproductive Technology method where the infertile couples hire a lady to have a biological child to establish their family. Apart from sterile couple, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) couples hire surrogates to realize their dreams of paternity. Infertility affects more than seven million people alone in the United States of America and the most shocking part is around 12% of the total women population in the USA are suffering from infertility. Most of the sterile couples overcome their struggle and choose surrogacy to realize the dreams of paternity.
Once the intended parents decide to choose surrogacy, they need to contact the best agency such as surrogates across America to find the suitable surrogate. The agencies explain the terminologies, legal issues and the complication revolve around surrogacy. Meanwhile, even intended parents need to do research on surrogacy and its types. There are two types; traditional and gestational. Gestational is the most common and most popular type of surrogacy as it is legally less complicated and the baby born through this process and completely unrelated to the genes of a surrogate mother. This mean the baby through this process is genetically related to the intended parents or donors (if their sperm or egg is used).
Traditional substitute process is legally more complicated and in some states and countries, this type of substitute method is completely banned. Since the baby born through this process is genetically related to the substitute mother and intended father, most of the state laws consider the surrogate and intended father as the legal parents of the baby.

Therefore, while entering to the agreement read the conditions, legal rights and the compensation part carefully. If you are not sure about the process and terminologies, ask your agency to clarify the same.

How the surrogacy works?

A simple definition of a surrogacy is a lady accepts to become pregnant either through traditional or gestational process and hand over the baby to the childless couple after birth. It is a simple definition to understand the core view of surrogacy process. Couples who are not able to bear the child due to medical problem where all the ART process failed to show its results opt for surrogacy process. Couples who are seeking for the best surrogate mother need to understand that it is a very expensive process both in term of finance and emotions. In this blog, you come to know about different types of surrogacy and how it works.

Traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy are the two types of surrogacy. Most of the proxy agencies and doctors recommend gestational process rather than traditional. In traditional proxy process, a surrogate will become pregnant when the sperm of an intended father or a donor is injected to the uterus. The baby born through this process in genetically related to the surrogate and intended father or donor. Due to the psychological factors and the legal risks associated with this procedure, the agencies and doctors do not recommend traditional surrogacy.

In gestational procedure, the intended mother’s ova and intended father’s sperm is taken out. The ovum is fertilized by adding sperm in the laboratory. Doctors choose quality ovum and mix it with the best swimmers to form a healthy zygote. All these process are carried out in the laboratory. The resulting zygote is cultured in the lab for about six weeks. This zygote is later injected to the uterus of a proxy. The baby born through this process in genetically irrelevant to the surrogate where as the child is genetically related to the couples who are seeking child through this process.

What is gestational surrogacy?

Gestational surrogacy is a process where a gestational carrier becomes pregnant through artificial insemination. The artificial insemination is done through In-vitro fertilization treatment. IVF is a major treatment suggested for infertile couples when other assisted reproductive technology treatments are failed. In this therapy, woman’s egg is fertilized outside the human body. In IVF, women ovulatory system is constantly stimulated and monitored by the expert physicians. Fertility drugs are given to the patient to produce more than one egg since ova are required for successful IVF treatment. During this process, doctors use ultrasound and blood test to check whether the ova are ready for retrieval or not.

Once they detect the ova are ready for retrieval, they perform a simple surgical procedure by giving small amount of anesthesia to remove ova outside the body. If they fail to retrieve ova from ovaries, they perform laparoscopic surgery to retrieve eggs. In this surgery, doctors insert suction tube directly to the ovaries through abdomen. Although this procedure sounds simple, it requires strong anesthesia to carry out this surgery. After taking out the ova, a physician examines each and every ovum to select the strong ovum that can support IVF treatment. This strong ovum is placed in a cultural medium to await insemination. Meanwhile, the best swimmers are retrieved from intended father semen. The sperms are added to the ovum in the incubator.

After adding sperm with ovum, within few hours it penetrates and fertilizes the egg. However, doctors confirm this process when they visually see the two pronuclei. These pronuclei are the foundation of the zygote. After six days of fertilization, a fluid cavity is seen, which results in the formation of placenta and fetal tissues. This liquid is injected to the uterus of a surrogate to achieve pregnancy and this procedure is referred as gestational surrogacy. In this procedure, the baby is formed by the intended mother (donor) egg and intended father (donor) sperm. Therefore, the baby is harmonically irrelevant to the surrogate mother. Most of the agencies prefer this procedure because surrogate mum never feel bad to hand over the baby, which is irrelevant to her.

Surrogacy – Hope for intended parents and LGBT couples

Couples who are suffering from infertility struggle a lot to establish their family. The only hope for sterile and LGBT couples to establish their family is surrogacy. Intended parents can hire surrogates to fulfill their dream of parenthood by having a biologically related child. A surrogate becomes pregnant for the sake of childless couples, which is widely become popular as intended parents surrogacy. Surrogate agencies play a vital role in establishing a healthy relationship between childless couple and substitute. Couples who are looking for the best proxy to realize their dreams should contact the best agency in the USA as they help you in finding the suitable lady who match your requirements and work professionally.

Hiring a lady who works professionally is very important for both biological parents and agencies because the process involves huge amount of money as well as the hope of childless couples. Therefore, most of the agencies do careful screening and try to understand the true intentions of a lady who wishes to become surrogate. A lady working as substitute should have at least one biological healthy child and should get complete support from her husband, family, friends and relatives. She should not face any complications in her previous pregnancy and should have good medical history to become pregnant once again.

Strict screening is done by the agencies by considering the above factors. Once the substitute’s medical history and other factors match the requirements of the intended parents, agreement is made between the two that briefly outlines about the compensation, medical fee, legal costs and other factors involved in surrogacy process.

Intended parent’s surrogacy for childless parents

It is always better to enter into the process of surrogacy through a well known and reputed agency.  This is recommended in order to escape from the tensions of legal process, medical screening, and other issues like selection, finding a correct match who can meet all the medical requirements.  In case of private surrogacy, you have to find out a reliable person to enter into an agreement.  When you contact an agency, they will take care of everything and they will arrange everything so that in future there will be no issues, either legally or financially.  Intended parents should check out the reliability and credibility of the surrogate mother, so that in future they might not face any problems.

Financial stability is very important.  Therefore, intended parents should have financial stability before they request surrogacy.  The expenses are comparatively high and play an important role in this process.  Next comes, what type of surrogacy you intended to have, whether it is traditional surrogacy or gestational surrogacy.  In traditional surrogacy, the mother is also involved biologically with the child, in gestational surrogacy, the mother is no way connected biologically and the mother will be implanted with an embryo fertilized outside through the in vitro fertilization process.  The fertilized egg will be implanted and pregnancy is ensured.  Entire medical expenses are borne by the intended parents.

To fulfil the desire of intended parent’s surrogacy requirements, developing countries are offering that are comparatively cheap and reliable to the western countries.  One can easily find solutions for the parenthood problems.  In the Western world like in USA and UK and Australia it may be very difficult and often compensation goes as high as 50,000$s to 100,000$s for the future parents.  The involvement of emotions regarding child and delivery consequences is some of the important significant features in surrogacy.

One can find professional surrogacy experts who are well qualified surrogacy techniques across the nations like India, Thailand, Ukraine, and some other developing countries.  Among these professionals, many are trained in the western countries like the USA and UK to carry out these procedures efficiently.  They carry on this process by following rigid methods that are standard that includes physical health, mental health, character and personality checkups, legal issues, and medical matching.

In most of these countries the cost of surrogacy is as low as 70% comparing it with the cost in the US and other western countries.  The intended parents will be given assurance for their parenthood legally and medically and it will acknowledge legally.  The surrogate mother is never considered the rightful mother to the child she delivers, especially legally.  If the parents are intended to get their prospective child from sources where a foreign country is involved, it is necessary to know the legal procedures involved with respect to that country.
The intended parent’s surrogacy can be carried out in the USA with its fundamental nuances so that prospective parents can enjoy the parenthood without any obligation.

Why surrogacy is attaining importance

Humanity and society always tried to have their progeny and they always aspire to have stronger generation to follow them.  Family life is always important for a man.  When a couple cannot reproduce, they require somebody who can donate the egg and carry the child on behalf of the intended mother.  The mother who will deliver the child to the childless couple is known as surrogate mother.  Improvements in medical science and treatment that include higher level of technology to fulfill the desire and wish of childless parents has grown in an extraordinary level.  Where infertility treatment fails, surrogacy and the proxy mum will come into the picture.

The term surrogacy and substitute mother have been coined by a famous scientific fiction author Robin cook in is popular novel “The Surrogate Mother”.  When he wrote this novel, the science is still in its infant stage, now, whatever he has narrated in his novel, everything has been attained in reality.  The infertility and childless trauma and the agony experienced by the parents is beyond explanation and couple often become disgusted.  Modern technology and modern science have given a ray of hope to those couples where they can get a child using a proxy mother.

Having their own family, living with children is a dream of every couple.  When it is not possible they can decide to take the help of a surrogate mother if they are financially and emotionally stable.  But the process of having a child through surrogacy is not as easy as mentioned since the process is complicated and lengthy and it will take a minimum of one to one and half year time.  There are many legal issues involved in this process.

LGBT couples choose surrogacy through IVF

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples can establish their family through surrogacy process. However, many LGBT couples opt for adoption to provide home for a child in need. But, through surrogacy bisexual, gay and transgender couples can expand their family by having a biological child through in-vitro fertilization treatment. In this treatment, a donor’s egg is fertilized with intended male sperm and cultured in laboratory for two to six days. Then, the fertilized egg is transferred to the uterus of a proxy. The proxy carriers the baby for nine months and hand over to LGBT couples.

There are two types of surrogacy; traditional and gestational. In traditional LGBT surrogacy, the sperms of two gay men is collected through masturbation and injected to the proxy’s uterus through artificial insemination. A proxy need to undergo fertility treatment at least two weeks before impregnation. In gestational surrogacy process, a female ovum is fertilized with gay sperm outside the body. The zygote is then injected to a proxy’s womb. The baby born through this process is biologically related to the gay man.

Some claim that LGBT surrogacy is not unhealthy. The child raised by two dads or two moms is not good. However, this perception is totally uncorroborated. In fact, the ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) has stated that the agencies and clinics have ethical responsibility to consider the requests of LGBT and infertile couples to realize their dream of parenthood irrespective of marital status and sexual orientation. It also recommends that agencies and clinics should treat all the requests with respect and should treat LGBT couples equally with married couples.

An overview on types and process of surrogacy

Carrying pregnancy on behalf of infertile couple is defined as surrogacy and the women who accept this agreement or arrangement is recognized as surrogate mother. There are two main types of substitution, gestational proxy and traditional proxy. In gestational surrogacy method women become pregnant when embryos are injected into the stomach. This process as also recognized as “In-Vitro fertilization” (IVF) through which the egg is fertilized by sperm outside the human body. It has been considered a major medication for sterility.  The baby born through IVF process is genetically not related to a surrogated mother.
In traditional process, women become pregnant through the natural or artificial procedure. If a lady wishes to give birth for a child through traditional artificial process, the sperm of the intended father is regularly injected to a surrogate mother’s womb during monthly ovulation until her pregnancy. The baby born through this manner is genetically related to a proxy mother. But, gestation process is highly recommended to the surrogates rather than traditional procedure. Since, gestational procedure is considered less legally complex when compared to conventional procedure, it is recommended by most the doctors.

Childless couple can opt for surrogates when medical issues declare conceiving is risky for women. Infertile couple or women who are not able to conceive may seek a proxy agreement. If a proxy mother receives compensation beyond the medical expenses, such arrangement is named as commercial proxy.  However, the legitimacy and compensation may vary depending upon the jurisdictions and the arrangement.
